CPH2 Completes Final Site Test for Membrane-Free Electrolyzer in Northern Ireland

Clean Power Hydrogen (CPH2) has completed the final site acceptance test of its MFE110 electrolyzer at Northern Ireland Water’s (NIW) wastewater treatment facility in Belfast, marking the first commercial-scale deployment of its membrane-free electrolyser (MFE) technology.

The 500 kW system demonstrated consistent production of high-purity hydrogen and oxygen in a commercial environment. The MFE110 unit’s performance was validated in the presence of engineering partners Lagan and Arup, concluding a sequence of three on-site tests.

NIW’s adoption of the electrolyser represents a strategic move toward decarbonising wastewater treatment, aligning with broader regional energy and sustainability goals.

The project also establishes a critical technological precedent for Northern Ireland, which has yet to see industrial-scale production of high-purity hydrogen and oxygen. With the test complete, CPH2 is now accelerating the development of its 1 MW MFE220 model, which is expected to further validate the scalability and commercial viability of membrane-free electrolysis in grid-connected settings.

Mutual Energy proposes constructing a 35-kilometre hydrogen pipeline to link planned offshore wind projects with Belfast’s existing energy infrastructure. The goal is to supply green hydrogen to decarbonize two major gas-fired power plants and service key transport infrastructure, including the ports of Larne and Belfast and Belfast City Airport.
