India and Denmark are exploring closer cooperation in offshore wind, green hydrogen and energy system integration.

Denmark’s Minister for Business and Competitiveness Martin Lidegaard met India’s Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi in New Delhi to discuss opportunities to strengthen the bilateral energy partnership. Lidegaard also inaugurated Denmark’s country session at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026.

India has nearly 60 GW of installed wind capacity, around eight times Denmark’s capacity. Denmark brings experience in offshore wind development and renewable energy integration, while India offers a rapidly expanding market.

However, offshore wind projects require substantial investment in ports, transmission infrastructure and grid connections. Their development will depend on regulatory certainty, project economics and the ability to attract financing.

Green hydrogen presents another opportunity for cooperation, particularly as India seeks to expand domestic production. Yet high electricity costs, infrastructure requirements and uncertainty around long-term demand remain significant barriers to commercial deployment.

The International Energy Agency’s India Renewable Energy Market Report 2026, co-funded by Denmark, was launched at the summit. As solar and wind generation increase, investment in transmission, storage and flexible electricity markets will become increasingly important. Linking renewable power with hydrogen production and industrial demand could help integrate additional generation, provided projects are commercially viable.

India and Denmark have cooperated in the energy sector for around 30 years, beginning with Danish support for establishing the National Institute of Wind Energy in Chennai. Their current discussions build on that relationship, but no new project investments or implementation timelines were specified in the announcement.
