The California Energy Commission (CEC) has awarded Zero Emission Industries a $2 million grant to design, develop, and test a hydrogen fuel cell-powered small-fast harbor craft.
To date, the startup has earned more than $5 million in grants to help it realize its revolutionary hydrogen technology concepts.
ZEI is headed by CEO Dr. Joseph Pratt and consists of a group of world-renowned hydrogen experts who have extensive experience in the design, production, and implementation of hydrogen fuel cell power systems and other critical hydrogen technology. The Water-Go-Round ferry (now called the Sea Change by the vessel owner) was the first commercial hydrogen fuel cell vessel in the United States, and ZEI is best known for it. The vessel’s construction is complete, and sea trials will begin in summer 2021.
The project entails the development and integration of the world’s most efficient and operationally diverse zero-emission powertrain. The powertrain would include a cutting-edge hydrogen storage system, a fuel cell kit, a power system, a safety system, and a control and automation system, allowing for increased range, easy maintenance, and zero emissions.
