Nikola Corp. has received a $2 million grant from the US Department of Energy to advance research into autonomous refueling technology for future hydrogen fuelling stations.
When compared to a manual fuelling process, the project is projected to achieve this goal by working to develop an autonomous fueling system that can quickly refuel heavy-duty fuel cell electric trucks while minimizing labor and issues related to ergonomics and equipment maintenance. The Phoenix-based firm is working on commercial battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles, and energy infrastructure solutions.
In a statement, Nikola’s president of energy and commercial, Pablo Koziner, stated, “The work we’re conducting with the Department of Energy and our partners on fuelling technologies is part of Nikola’s holistic approach to the hydrogen ecosystem.”
The Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Transportation Office of the Department of Energy is funding the grant.
