Hy2gen plans to produce green ammonia as a marine fuel in the Norwegian municipality of Sauda, on the country’s southwest coast.
Hy2gen, Trafigura, a leading independent commodity trading company, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), a Danish fund management company specializing in renewable energy infrastructure, will jointly own the green ammonia production facility known as Iverson eFuels. Investing in the production, storage, and shipping facility will bring jobs to the local community, according to the consortium’s plans.
Before beginning the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase, the project owners worked with Norconsult on a 2021 pre-study that culminated in a complete construction plan by 2023. Assuming the final investment decision is made, construction will begin in the first quarter of 2024, with completion anticipated for early 2027.
The initial electrolyzer capacity of the Iverson project is 240 megawatts, which will allow it to produce 600 metric tons of green ammonia per day, with the possibility of significantly increasing production capacity in the future. Ships will be able to use green ammonia as a carbon-neutral alternative to traditional fossil fuels.

Approximately 50 people will be employed by the facility when it is fully operational, and another 100 indirect jobs will be created. The hiring process has already begun, and the project team will work with local authorities to bring in qualified candidates. the project team
For storage and transportation, ammonia gas is liquefied at minus 33 degrees Celsius. Iverson eFuels’ production, storage, and delivery processes in Sauda will be governed by the strictest safety standards. Agenda Vest and the UllaFrre fund are providing funding for the project.
