Menter Môn gets £150K grant to fund its hydrogen research

With a £150K grant to pursue research related to its hydrogen work, Menter Môn’s desire to realize the potential of renewable energy has been boosted.

The funds will be used to conduct a feasibility study into the notion of storing hydrogen as a liquid carrier, a world first, as part of a partnership led by Corre Energy. It’s one of twelve initiatives funded by the UK government as part of a two-phase net-zero innovation initiative. If the Corre and Menter Môn scheme’s first phase is successful, further money will be made available to develop a prototype at the projected Holyhead Hydrogen Hub.

“We’re happy to be part of this partnership that is carrying out pioneering work in the green energy industry and look forward to converting the concept into reality,” Menter Môn Managing Director Dafydd Gruffydd said.

“The demand for innovative technologies in this area is greater than ever, and we want to continue to play a vital role in this and other initiatives as an organization.” With Menter Môn spearheading other green initiatives like the Morlais tidal energy project, our focus on hydrogen aligns with our goal of developing knowledge and expanding local prospects in these areas.”

“Developing energy storage technologies is a critical step in our transition to clean and safe renewable energy,” said Guto Owen, Menter Môn Hydrogen Director. We’re all aware of the advantages of hydrogen as a zero-emission fuel for transportation, long-term energy storage, and home heating; this project puts all of that closer together.

“Renewable energy systems like this provide a major job, skills development, and supply chain possibilities in addition to evident environmental advantages.” With traditional fuel prices rising and the need to transition to a low-carbon economy, I believe hydrogen and the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub can play an important role.”

If the initiative is successful, it is intended that it would produce high-skilled employment in the area as well as draw worldwide interest, leading to more research and development possibilities for the area.
