Germany: Hydrogen strategy revision to solidify doubling electrolysis capacity by 2030

By rewriting its National Hydrogen Strategy before schedule, the German Economy Ministry (BMWK) hopes to consolidate goals to double the nation’s electrolysis capacity by 2030, which is required to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen.

According to the strategy, which was unveiled in 2020, the economy ministry seeks to strengthen a goal set forth in the coalition agreement for the government to construct generation facilities with a combined capacity of 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2030.

In the updated strategy, blue hydrogen (H2 made from natural gas where the carbon is captured) will be taken into consideration for a while. According to the strategy, “blue hydrogen will also have to be maintained and imported during a transitional time.”

The National Hydrogen Strategy is scheduled to be reviewed every three years, but because of the recent change in administration and the energy crisis, the economy ministry is doing so earlier than usual. The new strategy is expected to be enacted in January 2023.

Plans for new national pipelines, hydrogen storage ideas, import tactics, and global hydrogen infrastructure are also included in the redesign. In order to achieve net-zero climate goals, green hydrogen, or hydrogen produced using renewable electricity, has become a crucial fuel.

The climate-neutral gas is likely to replace other decarbonization technologies in industries like heavy industry and aviation where it is extremely challenging to reduce emissions.
