Two Indian ports to become hydrogen hubs

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) will establish two east coast and one west coast hydrogen hubs under the Green Shipping Initiative as part of the Maritime India Vision 2030.

To meet India’s 2030 hydrogen production ambitions, Paradip Port in Odisha, Deendayal Port in Gujarat, and V.O.Chidambaranar Port in Tamil Nadu would be created for handling, storage, and green hydrogen generation.

The minister said the Ports and Shipping ministry was developing green ports to make the Indian marine sector sustainable by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The minister founded the National Center of Excellence for Green Port and Shipping last November to enable major Indian ports source 60% of their energy from renewable sources like solar and wind.

The government will set up renewable energy projects, dust suppression systems, garbage disposal systems for sewage treatment plants in ports and ships, and shore reception facilities for ship wastes to make ports carbon-free.

The ministry is also renovating key ports with shore-to-ship electricity, use and promotion of electrically powered port equipment, storage, and bunkering facilities for eco-friendly fuels like hydrogen and ammonia.

To meet greenhouse gas reduction targets, India will apply International Maritime Organization-energy efficiency and carbon intensity regulations on all coastal and international vessels.
