The Commission welcomes the Roadmap on hydrogen standardization published today by the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance.
Setting European Standards in this area supports the EU’s ambitions towards a climate-neutral economy and the uptake of hydrogen in the European market.
The Roadmap on hydrogen standardization provides a comprehensive overview of standardization gaps, challenges, and needs identified by the alliance members. Such gaps still pose an important barrier to the roll-out of hydrogen technologies, applications, and investments. The roadmap covers standardization needs for the entire hydrogen value chain, from production, distribution, transport, and storage to end-use applications.
In line with the Standardisation StrategyEN•••, the roadmap also includes a set of recommendations to streamline and accelerate the process of setting European standards. It will inform the work of the Commission and the national and European standardization bodies. In particular, it will allow the Commission to prepare a standardization request for identified hydrogen standards to the European Standardisation Organisations.
The Roadmap reflects the identified priorities in the Standardization Annual Work Programme for 2023 and also follows the 2021 European Clean Hydrogen Alliance’s Report, which identified the lack of hydrogen standards as an important barrier to the rollout of new hydrogen solutions.
