HAV Hydrogen gets DNV approval for containerized hydrogen system

The deck-based containerized hydrogen (H2) energy system for ships that HAV Hydrogen intends to introduce has acquired Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV, and the company has revealed details of it six months after stating its intentions to do so.

The AiP is a crucial turning point for HAV Hydrogen in the launch of the new Zero Emission Pod system and client engagement for the first industrial installations of the system.

For the Zero Emission Pod, HAV Hydrogen has been granted Approval in Principle (AiP) by DNV. The AiP indicates that DNV has evaluated the H2 system and determined that it complies with all current class society regulations and any applicable regulatory requirements. Additionally, it verifies that the design is workable and that there aren’t any major difficulties blocking its realization.

The Zero Emission Pod system is a complete freestanding power pod that comes with all necessary support, safety, and power management components. The technology is adaptable and can easily provide 1,000 kW within the footprint of a typical 20-foot container by employing 200kW hydrogen fuel cells. Multi megawatt energy systems will also be possible by merging several containers, employing larger modules, or utilising a specific area below deck.

Installed effect can be used for the vessel’s primary propulsion systems or as a supplemental source of power to meet green operation criteria. In order to deliver the best possible zero emission power under the required operating conditions, sailing patterns, and vessel type, output impact will be dimensioned.

The hydrogen system can provide the ship with enough green power close to the dock so that it can reach zero emissions status without relying on onshore charging facilities.

Broad appeal

The containerized, deck-based system was created by HAV Hydrogen to expedite the use of hydrogen as a ship fuel in the commercial sector. Shipowner demands for HAV Hydrogen’s containerized, deck-based hydrogen system have increased since the company announced its plans to do so.

It is anticipated that the use of hydrogen as ship fuel will increase thanks to widespread European and international regulatory support and the quick growth of the hydrogen supply in important harbors. While offshore wind is likely to gain in relevance as emission rules continue to tighten, HAV Hydrogen currently views short sea cargo, inland water cargo, and passenger transport as the most significant industry segments for their containerized Zero Emission Pod technology.

The Zero Emission Pod H2 containers will be ready for production by HAV Hydrogen to begin in the second part of 2023, with the first deliveries anticipated in 2024.
