The Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL) and H2Atlas Africa have jointly launched the first-ever Green Hydrogen Atlas Southern Africa.

This groundbreaking initiative aims to provide evidence-based information on the resources and feasibility of green hydrogen production in the region. The Atlas includes key indicators such as water resources, land availability, renewable energy sources, and the cost of hydrogen production. Its interactive map showcases the locations of interest for green hydrogen pilot plants across 12 Southern African countries.

The significance of this Atlas goes beyond scientific research. It plays a crucial role in facilitating the just transition to a green economy and ensuring that no one is left behind. By embracing green hydrogen, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region can actively participate in the global movement towards climate-friendly products and contribute to a sustainable energy sector.

With the participation of over 60 scientists, 16 modellers, and 12 regional technical committee teams from 13 countries, the production of the Green Hydrogen Atlas Southern Africa represents a collaborative effort to drive sustainable energy development and enhance climate adaptation and mitigation programs.

The Atlas serves as a decision support tool for policymakers, investors, researchers, and potential funders, providing them with the necessary information to assess the potential of green hydrogen development in Southern Africa. It will aid in the formulation of national and regional roadmaps and strategies to foster a green hydrogen-based economy in sub-Saharan Africa.

Moreover, the Atlas holds great relevance not only for Africa but also for Germany and the rest of the world. It provides valuable insights that German and African businesses and industries can leverage in partnership, facilitating the adoption of appropriate technologies for sustainable development.

The H2Atlas project’s comprehensive assessment covers technological, environmental, economic, and social factors, considering both present and future local energy demands. It takes into account crucial aspects such as climate impact projections, water and energy requirements, and land eligibility. By presenting the “hot spots” of green hydrogen production potential, the Atlas highlights the enormous opportunities available throughout the region.

The release of the Green Hydrogen Atlas Southern Africa marks a significant milestone in the region’s journey towards a greener and more sustainable future. As the world increasingly recognizes the importance of green hydrogen, this initiative provides a valuable resource for driving the energy transition, fostering economic growth, and combating climate change.
