Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) has marked a pivotal moment in its journey toward a sustainable future with the announcement of a framework agreement signed with India’s ACME Group.

The agreement outlines the commencement of construction work on a large-scale green hydrogen project in Sokhna, set to kick off in early 2024.

The pact was sealed in New Delhi during a visit by an eminent business delegation spearheaded by SCZONE, aiming to highlight the abundance of investment opportunities available in Egypt.

This latest development follows an earlier memorandum of understanding signed by SCZONE and ACME Group in August 2022. That agreement delineated plans to erect a green hydrogen production facility with an impressive annual capacity of 2.2 million tonnes in Sokhna.

According to a SCZONE statement, the ambitious project, worth an estimated $12 billion, will span an area of 4.5 million square meters. During its pilot phase, the facility is set to churn out 100,000 tonnes per annum, a testament to the significant potential of this project.

The green hydrogen project demonstrates SCZONE’s commitment to supporting sustainable, low-carbon energy sources. Green hydrogen, produced from water electrolysis powered by renewable energy, is hailed as a clean fuel of the future and has potential applications across multiple industries, including power generation, heating, and transportation.

This partnership with ACME Group, a leader in the provision of innovative green energy solutions, comes at a crucial time as nations worldwide aim to shift away from fossil fuels and toward greener, more sustainable energy alternatives. By launching this significant green hydrogen project, Egypt solidifies its place on the global map of renewable energy ventures, providing a blueprint for other countries in the region.

The proposed plant signifies not only a step toward environmental sustainability but also a significant economic opportunity. It is expected to foster job creation and economic growth within Sokhna and beyond, further fueling Egypt’s thriving green economy.

Given the mounting global urgency to tackle climate change and shift toward sustainable energy production, this pioneering project serves as an embodiment of innovative, sustainable solutions that hold promise for a greener future.
