Lombardy, a region in Italy, celebrated an energy milestone with the inauguration of its first green hydrogen production plant in Pizzighettone, a significant step forward in the green energy sector.

The plant is operated by H2Energy, an ambitious start-up founded during the pandemic by process chemists Claudio Mascialino, Saro Capozzoli, and photovoltaic entrepreneur, Riccardo Ducoli.

Powering a Green Future with Hydrogen

H2Energy is making a mark in the energy landscape, having the capacity to produce 1MW of green hydrogen, equivalent to 18 kg per hour, without generating any CO2 emissions. This is a substantial contribution to the green energy revolution, pushing Lombardy, and Italy as a whole, closer to a carbon-neutral future.

Workforce Expansion and Research Collaborations

The company, which started amid the global pandemic, now boasts a workforce of about 30 employees and has established a research and development laboratory. The aim is to advance its technology, improve efficiency, and uncover new applications for green hydrogen.

In line with these objectives, H2Energy has initiated collaborations with academic institutions such as the Polytechnic of Turin and the Bicocca University of Milan, along with other Italian academic entities. These partnerships indicate a strong commitment to research and knowledge sharing, fostering an environment where academic insights can guide industrial applications.

Setting the Stage for Industrial Green Hydrogen Production

H2Energy is not resting on its laurels. In collaboration with the Lombardy Region, the company is scouting for an industrial area to kickstart the large-scale production of green hydrogen. This move is designed to establish an industrial chain of green energy, reinforcing the role of hydrogen as a vital component in the region’s energy portfolio.

The initiatives of H2Energy have set the stage for a larger green hydrogen ecosystem in Lombardy. This signals a promising future for green hydrogen production in Italy, demonstrating the country’s potential to become a frontrunner in green energy within Europe.

The journey of H2Energy serves as a testament to how innovative, forward-thinking companies can drive significant advancements in the green energy sector. With continuous research and development efforts, partnerships with academic institutions, and ambitious production goals, the company is poised to revolutionize Lombardy’s green energy landscape.
