The picturesque southern island of Jeju is setting its sights on becoming a beacon of sustainable energy with the unveiling of a groundbreaking large-scale green hydrogen production base.

The provincial government’s ambitious plan to spearhead technology development and demonstration projects for clean hydrogen aims to revolutionize the region’s energy landscape and lead the way in carbon-free hydrogen production.

The provincial government of Jeju is determined to harness the potential of green hydrogen, which refers to hydrogen produced using renewable energy sources without carbon emissions. By establishing a large-scale hydrogen production base, Jeju aims to pave the way for a sustainable future, reducing its carbon footprint and bolstering the island’s energy security.

To achieve its goals, the project will employ two different electrolysis technologies. One facility will utilize alkaline electrolysis to generate 10 megawatts (MW) of electrical output, while the other will rely on polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis technology to produce 5 MW of electrical output. Both methods involve the splitting of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy-generated electricity.

With a combined annual output of 30 MW, the project aims to be a game-changer for Jeju’s energy landscape. This remarkable feat would produce an electrical output 10,000 times the capacity an average household can consume in an hour. The clean hydrogen production will significantly contribute to curbing carbon emissions and promoting a more sustainable energy ecosystem.

While the project is ambitious and promising, there are challenges to overcome. Before commencing the large-scale green hydrogen production, a thorough feasibility review is essential to assess the technical, economic, and environmental aspects. Additionally, the successful implementation and operation of the facilities require strong support from both public and private sectors.

The project is scheduled to operate between 2025 and 2030 at the site of Jocheon-eup in Jeju City. During this time frame, the technology development and demonstration projects will pave the way for a more extensive and sustainable hydrogen infrastructure.

Jeju’s commitment to clean hydrogen production is not new. The provincial government previously launched green demonstration projects in Gujwa-eup, showcasing their dedication to exploring clean energy solutions and advancing the hydrogen economy.

As global concerns about climate change intensify, Jeju’s ambitious green hydrogen project is a beacon of hope, demonstrating how regions can lead the way in decarbonizing their energy sector and embracing sustainable alternatives.
