Tamil Nadu to become green hydrogen research centre
As green hydrogen production is still an expensive endeavor globally, IIT Madras has teamed up with a number of partners as part of the Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster in Tamil Nadu (HVIC-TN) program and is attempting to produce the fuel of the future at a cost-effective rate and scale.
IIT-M will collaborate with numerous enterprises on the research and production of green hydrogen as part of the effort. The program is anticipated to make a significant contribution to the National Green Hydrogen Mission and aid Tennessee’s development as a research hub.
Drone hydrogen fuel storage system from Honeywell and National Renewable Energy Lab
Honeywell and the DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) will prototype and commercialize a cartridge-based hydrogen fuel storage solution for Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) over a year. To qualify for the “Fuel Additives for Solid Hydrogen (FLASH) Carriers in Electric Aviation” project, Honeywell will provide technological expertise, fuel cartridge testing, supply chain assistance, prototype, and fuel cell evaluation.
NREL’s HyMARC (Hydrogen Materials Advanced Research Consortium) hydrogen carrier technology will mature under the FLASH project. Honeywell, NREL, and the DOE’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office sponsor the program. Industrial surveying, infrastructure inspection, and security are rapidly using electric UAVs. Many of these uses formerly needed inefficient ground vehicles or dangerous piloted aircraft.
UAVs may be more efficient, reliable, and precise than combustion-driven aircraft for short-range applications. Today, battery-powered electric UAVs lack long-range and heavy-payload capabilities. NREL and Honeywell want to prove hydrogen can solve these long-duration, high-payload problems.
EXPO Ferroviaria to feature Alstom hydrogen train
The first hydrogen train in Italy will be unveiled at the opening of EXPO Ferroviaria 2023 at Rho Fiera Milano on October 3. The event is being organized in partnership with Trenord.
On the Alstom manufacturing facility in Italy, Alstom Ferroviaria and FNM designed and constructed the train for Ferrovie Nord Milano. The train is based on the Coradia Stream regional railway model.
ANGI and Nikola partner on hydrogen fuel infrastructure solutions under HYLA brand
An partnership between ANGI Energy Systems (a Vontier firm) and Nikola Corporation provides for the installation of new hydrogen fuel infrastructure solutions under Nikola’s HYLA brand.
This partnership aims to increase the accessibility of Nikola’s H2 decarbonization ecosystem.
Nikola’s idea will be supported by ANGI in an effort to create the largest open network of hydrogen fueling stations in North America. It will do this by setting up HYLA-branded, technologically sophisticated H2 dispensers. The dispensers will be made to be the first HD-capable products available. They will offer high flow refueling for heavy-duty vehicles. This network expansion is a part of a larger collaboration with Voltera, a reputable provider of vital infrastructure. The objective is to build the infrastructure required for decarbonizing transportation.
UK government launches consultation to harness hydrogen’s potential in gas supply
The United Kingdom is embarking on a transformative journey towards a greener and more sustainable energy future. As part of this endeavor, the UK government has initiated a consultation process to gather insights from industry experts and consumer groups on expanding the role of hydrogen in the national gas network. This move is in line with the government’s ambitious target of achieving a hydrogen production capacity of 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2030.
At present, hydrogen constitutes only a marginal portion of the gas supply to households and businesses across the UK. However, proposed measures could gradually increase its presence in the gas network, potentially reaching a maximum of 20%. This process, known as blending, involves integrating hydrogen into the existing gas infrastructure.
