Kassel-based storage operator Astora has set its sights on a colossal hydrogen storage project. With a vision to play a pivotal role in driving the hydrogen market and facilitating the country’s energy transformation, Astora is planning the construction of three caverns with an astonishing capacity of approximately one terawatt hour.
Eduard Schmitke, the Managing Director of Astora, expressed the company’s unwavering commitment to being a major force in the energy transition. He affirmed their ambition in an interview with energate, stating, “We have the clear goal of making a significant contribution to the energy transition and the ramp-up of the hydrogen market.”
This endeavor marks a remarkable shift in Germany’s energy landscape, where the focus is increasingly shifting towards sustainable and renewable sources. Hydrogen, often referred to as the “fuel of the future,” plays a pivotal role in this transition due to its potential to store and transport clean energy efficiently.
The heart of Astora’s plan lies in the construction of three caverns, each designed to store hydrogen on a massive scale. These caverns are engineered to store around one terawatt hour of hydrogen, a staggering capacity that has the potential to revolutionize the energy storage industry.
