KRISO’s Offshore Hydrogen & Ammonia Platform Gets ABS Approval

Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) has achieved a crucial milestone with the approval in principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its innovative offshore hydrogen and ammonia production platform design.

At the core of KRISO’s groundbreaking design is the production of green hydrogen, generated through the utilization of electricity harnessed from a wind farm. This ingenious platform design boasts a multifaceted approach, featuring key elements such as a desalination system that converts seawater into clean, potable water, an electrolysis system that produces hydrogen through water electrolysis, a compression system for pressurizing the hydrogen, a nitrogen generation system that extracts nitrogen from the air, and an ammonia synthesis system that generates ammonia through hydrogen reactions. The ABS AIP review primarily focused on ensuring the safety and feasibility of this pioneering concept.

Hydrogen, often referred to as the “golden molecule,” is rapidly emerging as a linchpin in the global quest to establish a sustainable energy ecosystem. The production of hydrogen, particularly green hydrogen sourced from renewable energy, is pivotal in realizing a worldwide hydrogen economy. The maritime sector, with its extensive network and experience, is poised to play a pivotal role in this transformative initiative, according to Panos Koutsourakis, ABS Vice President, Global Sustainability.

Keyyong Hong, President of KRISO, highlighted the platform’s remarkable capability to produce hydrogen and ammonia without emitting carbon, all while harnessing marine renewable energy sources. The environmentally friendly approach aligns with the broader global objective of achieving net-zero emissions in ocean-based activities. KRISO’s commitment to developing sustainable marine energy and eco-friendly ship technologies signifies its dedication to a greener and more sustainable future at sea.

This achievement marks a significant leap towards cleaner and more sustainable maritime operations. KRISO’s offshore hydrogen and ammonia production platform not only contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of the shipping industry but also sets a precedent for innovation in offshore energy solutions. As the world strives for greater sustainability, initiatives like this pave the way for a more environmentally conscious and energy-efficient future on the high seas.
