TotalEnergies and Air Liquide Transform Normandy with Hydrogen

TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have embarked on a visionary project that could reshape the energy landscape. This collaboration is set to usher in a new era of sustainability, marked by the long-term supply of green and low carbon hydrogen to the TotalEnergies refining and petrochemical platform in Normandy.

At the core of this initiative is the reduction of carbon emissions. The project anticipates a significant decrease of up to 150,000 tons of CO2 annually at the Gonfreville site, demonstrating a clear commitment to combatting climate change. This shared goal of reducing environmental impact aligns TotalEnergies and Air Liquide in their pursuit of industrial decarbonization, focusing their efforts on the Axe Seine corridor.

The project’s scope is ambitious and far-reaching. The blueprint calls for a robust supply of 10,000 tons of green hydrogen each year to the TotalEnergies platform in Normandy. Additionally, it anticipates the delivery of up to 5,000 tons per year of low carbon hydrogen, starting in the latter half of 2026.

At the heart of this initiative is the creation of green and low carbon hydrogen. The Normand’hy electrolyzer, boasting an impressive total electrical capacity of 200 MW, will serve as the production epicenter. It’s worth noting that TotalEnergies will have access to half of this prodigious production capacity, corresponding to the amount of hydrogen required for its refining processes. Furthermore, TotalEnergies has committed to supplying approximately 700 GWh/year of renewable and low carbon power to the Air Liquide electrolyzer. This supply equals half of its capacity, or 100 MW, in alignment with the share of hydrogen destined for the TotalEnergies refinery in Normandy.

The significance of this partnership is magnified by its alignment with TotalEnergies’ ambitious target to decarbonize the hydrogen used in its European refineries by 2030. By providing the electrolyzer with renewable electricity sourced from solar and wind projects, TotalEnergies leverages its position as an integrated power supplier. This proactive stance is essential in addressing environmental concerns and reducing the carbon footprint of industrial operations.
