BASF Process Catalysts, a front-runner in catalyst technology, has joined forces with Envision Energy, a leading provider of net-zero solutions, to advance the conversion of green hydrogen and CO2 into e-methanol through an innovative, dynamic process design.

The collaboration, underpinned by the expertise of both companies, aims to optimize the production of e-methanol—a clean-burning and versatile fuel. BASF brings its cutting-edge SYNSPIRET catalyst technology to the table, which Envision Energy will integrate into its forward-thinking energy management system. The ambitious goal is to showcase the viability of this advanced process design next year at Envision Energy’s Chifeng site in Inner Mongolia, China.

At the heart of this partnership is BASF’s groundbreaking catalyst technology, representing a significant leap in sustainable energy solutions. This catalyst efficiently converts green hydrogen and CO2 into e-methanol, offering a greener alternative for road, shipping, air transport, and various industries. E-methanol, produced with renewable energy, has the potential to replace fossil fuels without requiring a change in infrastructure. Its stability allows for room temperature storage at ambient pressure, contributing to an indefinite shelf life and promoting a more sustainable energy ecosystem with reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Envision Energy’s role involves designing a process package that maximizes the efficiency of BASF’s catalyst technology. Their innovative energy management system will facilitate the dynamic conversion of green hydrogen and CO2 into e-methanol, synchronized with wind power’s onstream time. Leveraging their AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) platforms, Envision Energy aims to optimize the novel, dynamic mode of chemical plant operation.

Detlef Ruff, Senior Vice President of Process Catalysts at BASF, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “By combining our innovative catalyst technology with Envision Energy’s deep expertise, we are confident we can unlock the full potential of green hydrogen and CO2 conversion to e-methanol.”

Frank Yu, Vice President of Envision Energy, emphasized the joint commitment to delivering sustainable energy solutions. He highlighted the collaboration as a demonstration of their dedication to bringing innovative advances to the sustainable energy value chain, striving to create economically viable and environmentally friendly solutions.
