Vöcklabruck’s mayor embarks on a groundbreaking journey, presenting the innovative “Hydrogen Vöckla-Ager” project to European Committee of the Regions.

Spearheaded by RAG Austria AG and Energie AG, the initiative aims to revolutionize energy storage and utilization, potentially reshaping the region’s energy landscape.

The “Hydrogen Vöckla-Ager” project envisages transforming former natural gas deposits into hydrogen storage facilities. Through electrolysis, excess solar power generated in summer will be converted into hydrogen, facilitating seasonal energy storage. Come winter, the stored hydrogen will be utilized by Energie AG to generate electricity at the Timelkam power plant, with surplus heat channeled into the district heating network.

Vöcklabruck district emerges as an ideal testing ground for the hydrogen pioneer project. With a robust industrial base led by companies like Lenzing AG, the region boasts industrial buyers eager to embrace hydrogen technology. Mayor Schobesberger envisions Vöcklabruck as Europe’s largest energy battery, setting a new standard for climate protection and sustainable development.

Mayor Schobesberger’s visit to Brussels not only showcased the project’s potential but also facilitated networking with political representatives championing similar initiatives across Europe. Back home, forging alliances with key stakeholders like Energie AG is crucial for project success. CEO Leonhard Schitter’s endorsement is pivotal in advancing the project’s implementation and integration into existing energy infrastructure.

As Vöcklabruck gears up to embrace the hydrogen economy, Mayor Schobesberger emphasizes the need for adaptation and progress. Transitioning from traditional energy paradigms to innovative solutions like hydrogen storage underscores the region’s commitment to sustainability and economic growth. The project symbolizes a transformative shift towards a future powered by clean, renewable energy sources.
