Stiesdal Hydrogen and Danfoss Join Hands for Hydrogen Electrolyzer Production

Stiesdal Hydrogen and Danfoss are ready to bring their recent innovation – a hydrogen electrolyzer – to the international market, highlighting a significant commercial agreement.

The collaboration facilitates the development of a new, scalable solution for a key component of Stiesdal Hydrogen’s electrolyzer – the electrolysis cell stack. This partnership positions Danfoss and Stiesdal Hydrogen to increase electrolyzer capacity commensurate with the burgeoning demand for green hydrogen.

Green hydrogen fortifies the shift towards total decarbonization in industries that find it challenging to adopt renewable electricity, ushering in an era of clean fuel for planes, ships, vehicles, and heavy industries.

In the words of Bo Birkemose, Head of Strategic Partnering, Stiesdal, the partnership has achieved a significant milestone in re-engineering the core components of alkaline electrolysis. The upshot is an electrolyzer that synchronizes seamlessly with renewable energy sources fostering cost-effective green hydrogen production. They envision their green hydrogen production playing a central role in stabilizing and balancing the global energy supply.

The prototype, designed and tested using Danfoss’s proficiency in custom plates and welding, is now successfully operating as the initial electrolyzer production versions at a combined biogas and PtX (Power-to-X) plant in Denmark. Here, green hydrogen merges with surplus biogas to produce methane gas. Stiesdal Hydrogen and Danfoss Heat Exchangers are prepared to deploy the electrolyzer across more markets and industries.

Green hydrogen, a rapidly developing renewable energy field, holds great promise as a solution for sectors that are hard to abate. Amidst global efforts to transition from fossil energy sources to cut down carbon emissions and mitigate climate change, hydrogen through water electrolysis, powered by sustainable energy sources, emerges as a groundbreaking solution.
