South Australia has received federal approval for its 200MW Whyalla hydrogen plant under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
This marks a significant advancement for the project, which had already secured development approval from both state and Commonwealth agencies in July.
The project is a collaborative effort involving the Office of Hydrogen Power SA, ATCO Australia, and BOC. It has secured over $402 million in funding, underscoring strong financial support for this initiative.
The Whyalla facility will be a vital source of flexible power, providing grid stability for homes and businesses across the state. It will utilize surplus renewable energy from large-scale wind and solar farms, ensuring a consistent supply. This capability will help balance power supply with demand, crucial for maintaining grid stability.
Construction is planned to start in the latter half of 2024, with completion anticipated by early 2026. This timeline reflects a commitment to swiftly advancing the project while maintaining high standards of environmental and social responsibility.
