MOPCO, a key player in Egypt’s fertilizer industry, is set to launch an ambitious green hydrogen project by 2027.
This venture includes setting up a new facility focused on producing green ammonia. The site will be situated in the Damietta Port area, a strategic location along Egypt’s eastern Mediterranean coast. This facility will work in tandem with existing MOPCO ammonia plants.
The project is a collaborative effort involving MOPCO, Norway’s Scatec, and the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company. This consortium aims to transform the green hydrogen into around 150,000 tons of green ammonia each year, primarily for export through Damietta Port.
In addition to its green hydrogen initiatives, MOPCO is enhancing its urea production capabilities. The company is expanding and upgrading its existing operations to improve capacity and efficiency. These improvements are expected to be completed by mid-2027 and will further benefit the melamine industry.
The dual focus on green hydrogen and urea expansion comes with a hefty investment nearing $400 million. This investment underscores MOPCO’s significant role in Egypt’s fertilizer sector, where it fulfills a substantial portion of domestic urea and ammonia demand. The company also serves global markets, exporting urea to Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
