Finland’s state-owned transmission system operator (TSO) Gasgrid and the Government of Åland have signed a letter of intent (LoI) to collaboratively explore the development of a hydrogen network in Åland.
The primary objective of this cooperation is to map, study, and plan a potential hydrogen network, which includes identifying locations for production and consumption plants, as well as establishing a preliminary timetable for the hydrogen economy in the region.
In the initial development phase, relevant stakeholders—including municipalities, authorities, and developers of wind power and hydrogen projects—will be identified and engaged in the process. The partnership will conduct studies and analyses to evaluate development needs, transmission capacity, and the technical and economic conditions necessary to create a roadmap for implementing hydrogen infrastructure. Additionally, the parties will define the role of the Åland hydrogen network operator.
Meanwhile, Gasgrid is advancing its hydrogen transmission infrastructure projects in the Baltic Sea, including the Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector (BHC) and the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor (NBHC), aimed at enhancing clean hydrogen production and distribution across Europe.
