Adani Group is making strides in sustainable energy by blending green hydrogen with natural gas for cooking in Ahmedabad.
Through its venture with TotalEnergies, Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL) has started incorporating 2.2-2.3% green hydrogen into the natural gas supply in Shantigram to reduce emissions and support net-zero targets.
ATGL has successfully installed a Hydrogen Blending System and in-situ Hydrogen Generation at Adani Shantigram to service about 4,000 users with this eco-friendly blend.
The plan is to increase the hydrogen blend in natural gas to 5% and eventually to 8%, expanding beyond Shantigram to other parts of Ahmedabad and further.
According to ATGL CEO Suresh P. Manglani, this initiative is crucial for decarbonizing India’s energy sector. Although green hydrogen doesn’t emit carbon, its corrosive nature presents challenges for existing pipelines. Testing indicates that up to 10% hydrogen can safely blend with natural gas. ATGL is blending 2.2-2.3% hydrogen and aims to reach the regulatory limit of 8%. For blends up to 30%, pipeline upgrades would be needed.
