In a bid to spearhead sustainable and zero-emission temporary power solutions for the UK construction and off-grid power markets, AFC Energy and Speedy Hire have joined forces to launch a dedicated hydrogen-powered generator plant hire business.

This strategic collaboration, formed as a 50:50 joint venture (JV), aims to provide cutting-edge, eco-friendly power generation equipment and services to the construction sector, aligning with the nation’s commitment to decarbonization.

AFC Energy, a leading hydrogen expert, and Speedy Hire, renowned for product innovation and sustainability, are combining their expertise to deliver scalable and modular zero-emission power generators. By harnessing the potential of hydrogen fuel, these generators offer an alternative to traditional diesel-powered solutions, significantly reducing carbon emissions and contributing to the UK’s ambitious climate goals.

Under the 50:50 joint venture, AFC Energy and Speedy Hire will collaborate to offer a full-service hire model. The comprehensive package will include coordinating generator equipment, maintenance, technical support, site preparation, and fuelling. The fusion of AFC Energy’s state-of-the-art equipment with Speedy Hire’s industry-leading services is set to revolutionize the landscape of temporary power solutions.

The JV’s first step will be to acquire 30kW H-Power Generation units from AFC Energy for £2 million in aggregate. These cutting-edge systems will provide zero-emission power solutions to construction sites across the UK. The exclusive availability of AFC’s hydrogen-powered equipment through Speedy Hire is expected to accelerate the adoption of green power solutions, making a significant impact on the construction and temporary power markets.

With the first units set to be available later this year (2023), AFC Energy and Speedy Hire anticipate a surge in demand for zero-emission power solutions. The partnership aims to bolster the adoption of hydrogen-based generators in line with the UK’s push for sustainable growth and carbon reduction. As demand grows, further orders for the hydrogen-powered generators are expected to keep pace with the construction industry’s transition to greener practices.

AFC Energy’s commitment to sustainable power solutions has been further bolstered by recent funding from the UK Government’s red diesel program. Awarded up to £4.8 million, the grant acknowledges the successful field testing of AFC’s H-Power Tower generators on UK construction sites over the past year. The funding reinforces AFC Energy’s drive to advance the development and commercialization of the next generation of eco-friendly generators.

The collaboration between AFC Energy and Speedy Hire marks a significant stride towards a sustainable future in the construction and temporary power sectors. By combining cutting-edge hydrogen technology with a renowned industry leader’s service excellence, the joint venture is set to propel the adoption of zero-emission power solutions across the UK. As construction sites transition from diesel reliance to hydrogen-powered efficiency, this partnership serves as a beacon of hope in the fight against climate change.
