Alstom is set to supply two Coradia Stream H hydrogen trains to Ferrovie del Sud Est, the esteemed transport operator in the scenic Puglia region of Italy.
Simultaneously, Ferrovie Nord Milano is reinforcing its commitment to green transportation with a second order for two Coradia Stream H trains, complementing the six already in the pipeline. The existing framework agreement allows for a potential acquisition of up to 14 hydrogen trains, showcasing a dedicated effort towards fostering sustainable transit solutions.
The Coradia Stream H trains, derived from Alstom’s single-deck Coradia Stream regional train platform, exemplify cutting-edge engineering tailored for the European market. Manufactured in Italy, these hydrogen-powered trains leverage green hydrogen, ensuring a CO2-neutral operation and elevating the travel experience for passengers. Alstom’s commitment to sustainability is manifested in various innovations, including clean energy conversion, an efficient energy supply and storage system, and intelligent energy management.
Alstom’s foray into hydrogen trains predates current environmental imperatives, with the company being the first rail player to invest in this alternative to diesel traction for non-electrified rail lines. The entire design and production process occurred at Alstom’s state-of-the-art facilities in Italy, underscoring the company’s dedication to local manufacturing and innovation.
At the heart of the Coradia Stream H trains lies the “muscle car,” the intermediate car housing the core of hydrogen technology. The process involves combining hydrogen stored in tanks with external oxygen, generating energy without releasing CO2 into the atmosphere. High-performance lithium-ion batteries complement hydrogen cells during acceleration, optimizing fuel consumption.
