Due to unsuitable geotechnical site characteristics and project economics, Australian refiner Ampol has postponed plans for a pilot hydrogen production facility at its 109,000 b/d Lytton refinery in Brisbane, Queensland.

In collaboration with the Irish-based green hydrogen company Fusion Fuel Green, Ampol was evaluating the small-scale prototype hydrogen production plant in Lytton.

The Lytton hydrogen project has been put on hold for the time being, Ampol CEO Matt Halliday announced on August 22. “Hydrogen will arrive, especially in the difficult-to-abate sections, but it will take some time.”

Despite stopping the Lytton hydrogen project, Ampol continued to conduct commercial negotiations and research to evaluate the economics of hydrogen generation and domestic distribution options.
