Ampyr Energy has taken full control of a major battery energy storage project in New South Wales, Australia.
This development follows their acquisition of Shell Energy’s 50% stake in the Wellington Battery Energy Storage System. With ownership of both stages of the project, Ampyr plans to fast track the development. The first stage, with a capacity of 300 MW/600 MWh, is already in the final stages of planning and financing, while the second stage, expected to add another 100 MW/400 MWh, is also underway.
The Wellington BESS project, located near Dubbo in the Central West Orana Renewable Energy Zone, promises to enhance energy reliability by connecting to Australia’s National Electricity Market. It will support renewable energy generation and stabilize electricity supply. Ampyr’s acquisition underscores their commitment to advancing clean energy infrastructure. They aim to have the first stage operational by 2026 and the second by 2027.
Ampyr Australia has ambitious plans, targeting 3 GW of energy storage in the country by 2030. The parent company, Ampyr Energy, which is supported by US-based Stonepeak, is actively developing 12 GW of projects in various regions worldwide.
