Ardagh Goes Green with Hydrogen

Ardagh Glass Packaging-Europe, part of the Ardagh Group, is taking a significant step forward in sustainable manufacturing.

At its Limmared facility, the company is using an on-site hydrogen electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen for glass melting. This initiative has resulted in saving approximately 70 tonnes of CO2 since October.

The facility employs a 5MW Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) hydrogen electrolyzer. This technology is essential for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity. The green hydrogen generated is then incorporated into the energy mix for a partly hydrogen-fired glass furnace.

Testing of the electrolyzer began in October, and since then, the system has successfully produced and combusted 109,000 cubic meters of hydrogen. This achievement has contributed to a significant reduction in carbon emissions equivalent to 70 tonnes of CO2. Project manager Daniel Johansson noted that testing using the hydrogen energy mix is progressing smoothly without impacting glass quality or furnace performance.

The project aims to replace 20% of the natural gas used in the furnace with green hydrogen. This shift is expected to further cut carbon emissions from glass packaging production at the Limmared facility. CEO Martin Petersson highlighted that integrating green hydrogen represents a transformative approach to sustainably manufacturing glass packaging.
