The state of Western Australia and the federal government of Australia have pledged a combined AUD 140 million to support the development of a green hydrogen production hub in the Pilbara region.
The investment, with each party committing AUD 70 million, aims to establish a cutting-edge complex capable of producing approximately 492,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The project’s scope includes the construction of essential infrastructure, such as roads, to kickstart operations by mid-2028.
The Pilbara Hydrogen Hub holds promise as a key hub for hydrogen production and export, positioning itself as an international gateway for Australian-made green steel and iron. With the backing of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), the project envisions a robust hydrogen pipeline system with a transfer capacity equivalent to 2 GW-5 GW of renewable energy.
The venture is not only a boon for the environment but also for the economy, with projections indicating the creation of nearly 1,000 direct and indirect jobs. Furthermore, plans for establishing a Clean Energy Training and Research Institute underscore the commitment to nurturing talent and expertise in the burgeoning field of clean energy.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, lauded Western Australia’s transition from a mining powerhouse to a global leader in hydrogen production. The government’s backing reflects a strategic vision for positioning Australia at the forefront of the clean energy revolution.
