Swiss energy company Axpo and French energy investor ENEGO are partnering to examine the feasibility of a 100 MW green hydrogen production plant in Sicily’s industrial complex.
The plant is expected to be located in the Priolo-Augusta complex on the island’s east coast.
The proposed plant will play a crucial role in forming a ‘hydrogen valley’ between Catania and Siracusa. The new plant would cater to the green energy demand from industries in the nearby area. This collaboration is a part of Axpo’s strategy to actively participate in developing the green hydrogen economy in Switzerland and across Europe.
If there’s sufficient demand, Axpo and ENEGO may expand the plant’s capacity up to 300 MW. The plant will be instrumental in producing green hydrogen for local industry and transportation needs. Additionally, it could establish a direct connection with the European hydrogen network under the European Hydrogen Backbone initiative.
Axpo and ENEGO will conduct a feasibility study in the coming months to consolidate the project’s costs and business plan. Axpo is also collaborating with Australian company IGE on developing one of the largest hydrogen production facilities in Italy, and is planning the first hydrogen-powered passenger vessel on Switzerland’s Lake Lucerne with the SGV shipping company.
