TERNA has awarded Baker Hughes a contract to supply gas turbines and compressors that can operate on a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen for a new compression station of the Greek Natural Gas Transmission System.

The compression station will be used to supply Greece’s domestic gas market..

For a total of three NovaLT12 hydrogen-ready gas turbines and three PCL compressors, Baker Hughes will supply three compression trains. Technology has been developed to support a compression station that can transport up to 10% hydrogen for this project. ‘ With an expected start date of 2024, the facility is expected to directly support European Union (EU) Hydrogen Strategy objectives to speed up the development of clean hydrogen and ensure its role as the cornerstone of a climate-neutral energy system by the year of 2050.

Baker Hughes has a long history of developing and supplying turbomachinery equipment for the compression, transportation, and utilization of hydrogen. The NovaLT12 gas turbine will be the first hybrid hydrogen turbine to be integrated into an Italian natural gas pipeline system in 2020 as part of a partnership between the company and energy infrastructure network provider Snam.
