Ballard Power Systems has signeda Long Term Supply Agreement (LTSA) with Solaris Bus & Coach for the supply of 1,000 hydrogen fuel cell engines to cater to the burgeoning European transit bus market.
The LTSA solidifies and expands the existing partnership between Ballard Power Systems and Solaris, aiming to propel the adoption of fuel cell technology in the European bus sector. With an initial order for around 300 fuel cell engines, the agreement extends to include after-market and extended warranty services, along with an additional commitment for approximately 700 fuel cell engines. This consolidated order stands as the largest in Ballard’s history, highlighting the growing demand for clean energy solutions in public transportation.
The 1,000 fuel cell engines, scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2027, will cater to the diverse needs of the European transit bus market. Comprising approximately 80% FCmove-HD 70 kW engines and 20% FCmove-HD+ 100 kW engines, the supply will address both the 12-meter and 18-meter bus segments. This strategic allocation underscores the versatility and scalability of hydrogen fuel cell technology in meeting varying operational requirements.
The deployment of Ballard fuel cell engines in Solaris buses across 22 European cities signifies a concerted effort to accelerate the transition to zero-emission urban transport. Backed by supportive policies and regulations aimed at decarbonizing public transit fleets, hydrogen fuel cells offer compelling advantages such as zero emissions, rapid refueling, and extended range. As awareness of these benefits grows, the momentum toward zero-emission city buses continues to intensify.
