Timothy Halman, Minister of Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change, has granted Bear Head Energy approval for its environmental assessment for its green hydrogen and ammonia production, storage, and loading facility in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia.
The firm, a BAES Infrastructure subsidiary, is authorised to install up to 2 GW of hydrogen electrolysers.
Bear Head may produce up to 350,000 tonnes of hydrogen and two million tonnes of ammonia annually at full build-out and peak power intake. The project, which is being developed in stages, is anticipated to start delivering green hydrogen and ammonia by 2028, taking advantage of Nova Scotia’s wind resources, backing from the Canadian federal government, and closeness to important markets.
In the most recent Budget 2023, the Canadian government provided details on the Clean Hydrogen Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which includes a 40% ITC for clean hydrogen and a 30% ITC for clean technologies.
The environmentally friendly hydrogen and ammonia factory is being designed by Bear Head Energy in partnership with Kiewit and io Consulting. The organisation has already received a number of approvals and permits, including authorization to build its maritime terminal and unloading facilities.
