A team from the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) has developed a near-zero-emissions, high-power, and high-brake thermal-efficiency control technique for 2.0L direct-injection hydrogen engines. Their research is published in the journal Fuel.

Hydrogen engines with direct injection (DI) may generate high power with great thermal efficiency and a minimal risk of aberrant combustion. Despite the fact that hydrogen is carbon-free and eliminates several criterion pollutants, the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) remains significant in DI hydrogen engines operating under heavy loads.

Some experiments have focused on lowering NOx emissions from medium-powered, normally aspirated or supercharged engines.
