For the first time in Korea, SK Eco Plant has shown the generation of eco-friendly hydrogen by employing a Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell to extract hydrogen from water without releasing carbon dioxide. This is the first time that this has been accomplished.

Together with Bloom Energy and Bloom SK Fuel Cell of the United States, SK Ecoplant constructed a 130kW SOEC facility at the Bloom SK Fuel Cell manufacturing plant in Gumi, Gyeongbuk, and began full-scale test production of environmentally friendly hydrogen.

This demonstration is significant in that SK Ecoplant, Bloom Energy, and Bloom SK Fuel Cell have collaborated to obtain water electrolysis technology, which is the foundation for carbon neutrality in the transportation sector.

Hydrogen and oxygen are produced by the electrolysis of water, which is a process that decomposes water and creates oxygen.

Additionally, SK Eco Plant wants to promote SOEC technology by performing other demonstration projects in Korea, in addition to the Gumi plant demonstration project already underway.

The plan also includes the goal of securing the world’s most efficient green hydrogen production technology by further enhancing collaboration for SOEC application technology development and the preparation of an initial entry point into the global hydrogen market.
