More than half a million construction machines in the performance class from 56 to 560 kilowatts will be produced across the world in 2022.

With further growth predicted for this market in the coming years, the Bosch powertrain division expects to play an equally important role in these developments

The hydrogen engine: a tried-and-true design with a sustainable fuel

The foundation of hydrogen engines is well-proven, tried-and-true engine technology that has been modified to assure a sustainable future. These powertrains are essentially climate neutral when powered by green hydrogen. Additionally, as the powertrain concept needs the same infrastructure and vehicle storage systems as fuel cell technology, it serves as a useful complement to that technology. Bosch is engaged in more than 100 technical trials with clients all around the world and is currently working on systems with port fuel and direct injection. The business has already secured its first volume production project in India. Pauer explains that because construction equipment is typically utilized in stationary, heavy-load applications, this is the precise setting in which hydrogen engines may excel due to their great efficiency and resilience. However, the powertrain solution will also be utilized in long-distance travel and agricultural machinery.

Additionally, the hydrogen engine is a very viable solution for huge engines, such as the powerplant for dump trucks used in the mining sector. Another instance is when sturdiness, dependability, and a small design are essential for effective operation. The new Bosch AFI-LP (alternative fuel injector – low pressure) injector supports the direct injection of hydrogen as well as the use of other fuels, such as methanol, for both port fuel and direction. This gives engine builders the greatest amount of flexibility.
