The Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub, a joint venture between bp and Aberdeen City Council, has submitted a planning application for the construction of a green hydrogen production and vehicle refueling facility powered by a purpose-built solar farm.

The proposed hydrogen factory and solar farm would be located on separate properties that would be linked by an underground solar grid connection. The hydrogen manufacturing facility will be erected on industrial land on Hareness Road in Aberdeen, while the proposed solar farm will be built on the former Ness landfill site.

The planning proposal is for the project’s first phase, which is intended to supply enough green hydrogen to fuel 25 buses each day as well as a variety of public and private cars.

The planning application’s decision is expected in the summer of 2023. The project’s current goal is to have the facility producing hydrogen by the end of 2024.
