Bernard Looney, CEO of BP, believes that hydrogen will fuel future low-carbon businesses.
BP reacted quickly and is currently beginning the design process to build a sizable, low-carbon hydrogen hub near its Whiting, Indiana refinery.
According to BP business insiders who spoke to Reuters, offshore wind and hydrogen would both play prominent roles. BP has reorganized its organization to establish a division solely focused on hydrogen. Additionally, it made a number of investments in significant hydrogen projects, including ones in Australia, Britain, and Europe.
Additionally, it is investigating projects in Mauritania and Oman with a view to producing green hydrogen.
Anja-Isabel Dotzenrath, head of renewables at BP and Looney, will present a clean hydrogen production plan in February with the goal of capturing 10% of the market for hydrogen in “key sectors” by 2030.
The project at BP’s Whiting refinery will initially switch out around 200,000 tonnes of the refinery’s annual consumption of grey hydrogen for blue hydrogen. By 2026–2027, the project might be operational and expanded to include green hydrogen.
In a subsequent phase, the low-carbon fuel will be utilized by additional heavy companies in the region to cut down on the 36 million tonnes of CO2 that are released there annually.
