Bremen will join a hydrogen transport network that includes Lower Saxony in 2025.

Anke Alvermann-Schuler, transmission system operator Gasunie Deutschland’s manager, said this should start this year between Hamburg and Bremen. Gasunie is creating the Hyperlink transit system to link Germany to the Netherlands and Denmark, among other nations.

Hydrogen is delivered by connection. Steel production requires significant amounts of gas. Cars, trucks, and planes employ hydrogen fuel cells. Bremen steelworks may use the energy source. Alvermann-Schuler stated that Stahlwerk Bremen and we are still in negotiations. Hyperlink will connect Lower Saxony’s Salzgitter and Wolfsburg industrial centers. North Rhine-Westphalia link is also planned.

Bremen Senator for Economic Affairs Kristina Vogt said the state is moving toward a hydrogen economy. Vogt wants Hyperlink to connect the Bremen steelworks as a hydrogen user. Vogt said this allowed other firms access. I want to help steelworks and small and medium-sized firms transitioning to the hydrogen economy.

Vogt mentioned the Hybit hydrogen project. The Bremen-Mittelsbüren power plant will build a 10-megawatt hydrogen electrolysis unit. Thomas Kalkau, co-managing director of Bremer Hydrogen GmbH, said construction will begin this spring.

Gasunie predicts a 1000-kilometer link. For this, 690-kilometer natural gas pipes will be used. Hydrogen flows instead of natural gas. Gasunie spokesman claimed current pipes are viable despite hydrogen and natural gas densities. Retrofitting fittings is one example. Rebuild 270-kilometer sections.

Hydrogen can pollute. Only renewable energy makes it. Green hydrogen follows. In the future, Bremen ports should import green hydrogen. Wilhelmshaven and Stade may also matter. These will become green hydrogen hubs after delivering liquefied natural gas.
