Cranfield Aerospace Solutions (CAeS) has recently revealed the groundbreaking design of its 240 kW hydrogen fuel cell technology system, destined to power the Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander aircraft.

CAeS has ingeniously packaged the entire full-power system, including the hydrogen fuel cell system and electric motor, into the nacelle of the aircraft. This pioneering design not only addresses technical complexities but also ensures safety and efficiency in the hydrogen powertrain.

The forward section of the nacelle houses the hydrogen fuel cell system (HFCS) along with essential components like electric motors, inverters, controllers, and electrical cabling. Meanwhile, the rear nacelle accommodates the ground power interface and high voltage power distribution system. The innovative placement of HFCS heat exchangers around the landing gear structure further optimizes space utilization.

By overcoming packaging and thermal management hurdles, CAeS has laid the foundation for the commercial viability of hydrogen fuel cell technology in aviation.
