Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission, CFE, is collaborating with Pemex to develop green hydrogen production at the Salina Cruz refinery.

This initiative aims to replace traditional hydrogen derived from natural gas with a renewable alternative, significantly reducing carbon emissions. The initiative targets decarbonizing energy production by employing electrolysis powered by renewable energy.

Pemex, the largest hydrogen consumer in Mexico, currently uses 220,000 tons of hydrogen annually for refining, mostly produced from fossil fuels. The Salina Cruz refinery in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec is ideal for this project due to its alignment with regional sustainability goals.

Despite its potential, challenges exist, including Mexico’s underdeveloped regulatory framework for green hydrogen and the high production costs. To overcome these obstacles, CFE collaborates with academic institutions to develop domestic technologies to reduce costs. This partnership is part of Mexico’s ambition to transition to greener energy sources and decrease its carbon footprint.
