At the ACT Expo in Long Beach, California, Chart Industries revealed a new product line for heavy-duty trucks: an onboard liquid hydrogen (HLH2) fuel system.

Chart’s HLH2 (horizontal liquid hydrogen) fuel system, which is now commercially available, is designed to address rising market demand for a wide range of fuel cell and internal combustion engine applications.

The product was created and manufactured by the US-based cryogenic equipment manufacturer in Ball Ground, Georgia (the birthplace of Chart’s onboard natural gas – HLNG – fuel system) and tested in New Prague, Minnesota (the birthplace of Chart’s hydrogen products).

The new HLH2 onboard product, according to Chart, has a global capacity of more than 25,000 units per year.

“Similar to HLNG, HLH2 requires around half the volume and weight of comparable H35 or H70 compressed hydrogen storage,” Chart said in a statement. As a result, the HLH2 will be excellent for bigger loads and longer ranges. The exhibit at ACT Expo revealed that dual-side mounting, like a conventional diesel tank, may provide appropriate range.”
