China Yuchai International, through its principal operational subsidiary, Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Company Limited (“GYMCL”), reported that its YCK05 hydrogen-powered engine demonstrated steady ignition and operation during a recent demonstration at the Beijing Institute of Technology.
The YCK05 engine is the world’s first commercial vehicle hydrogen engine to be operational in China, the world’s largest commercial vehicle market.
This accomplishment represents another milestone for Yuchai hydrogen technology in the development of hydrogen energy as an ecologically friendly alternative propulsion system, after the company’s launch of hydrogen fuel cell technology.
The YCK05 hydrogen-powered engine incorporates a number of sophisticated special technologies, including multi-point high-pressure inlet air injection, high-efficiency low-inertia turbocharging, and high-efficiency lean burn combustion.
The engine’s structure and subsystems, such as the combustion and gas distribution systems, are upgraded.
Yuchai pioneered the research and development of hydrogen-powered engines for domestic commercial cars in China and strengthened its scientific research collaboration with the Beijing Institute of Technology. Yuchai will leverage its significant experience and advantages in the research and development of internal combustion engines to establish a reliable procedure for scaling up hydrogen-powered engine development to large-scale mass production. Hydrogen engines such as the YCK05 may find widespread application in the bus, municipal, sanitation, logistics, and distribution markets.
Hydrogen power is a critical stage in China’s domestic engine industry’s transition away from existing internal combustion technology as the country works to enhance the country’s environmental performance.
