Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen is pressing the Sarawak Utility and Telecommunications Minister, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, for details on the economic benefits for Sarawakians stemming from two hydrogen plants in Bintulu.

He is particularly interested in understanding the impact on employment, job roles, and wages for local residents. Chong has raised several questions about the effects of foreign investments in the Hydrogen H2biscus and Hydrogen H2ornbill plants. These facilities, backed by international investors, are projected to produce around 200,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually. His main concerns are the actual number of jobs created for the local population, the type of positions available, and the expected wages. Additionally, Chong questions the overall financial return these foreign investments bring to the regional government.

Lack of Clarification

During a recent debate on the Distribution of Gas (Amendment) 2024 Bill, Chong emphasized the need for detailed information about how these plants benefit local employment and the economy. However, he has expressed disappointment that Minister Julaihi has yet to provide specific answers to these critical questions. Chong insists that for any foreign direct investment (FDI), the main focus should be on how it fosters job creation and economic growth for the local community.
