Cipher Neutron Inc. and Western University have secured funding from the Government of Ontario through the Hydrogen Innovation Fund of the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).

The collaborative project, named “Negative Emissions Technology for Pale Blue Hydrogen Production,” aims to propel hydrogen technology advancements with a focus on Cipher Neutron’s proprietary AEM Electrolyser technology.

The overarching goal of the CN-UWO Project is to explore “Negative Emissions Technology for Pale Blue Hydrogen Production.” This initiative aligns with the global push for sustainable and eco-friendly hydrogen solutions. Cipher Neutron’s AEM Electrolyser technology takes center stage in this venture, offering a promising avenue for the development of green hydrogen.

Cipher Neutron and Western University plan to integrate AEM Electrolysers with Photovoltaic (“PV”) solar panels, leveraging renewable energy sources for hydrogen production. The installation of a proprietary single cell AEM stack at Western University signifies a significant milestone, marking the operational commencement of the CN-UWO Project.

The IESO-backed opportunity for the CN-UWO Project positions Cipher Neutron and Western University to fast-track hydrogen technology development. The project’s focus extends to optimizing Ontario’s electricity system, including leveraging hydrogen storage for efficient grid balancing and potentially incorporating hydrogen into natural gas-fired turbines for peak grid capacity.

The Hydrogen Innovation Fund, administered by the IESO, serves as a pivotal catalyst for testing and integrating hydrogen technologies. With a budget of $15 million over three years, the fund aims to objectively evaluate how hydrogen resources can enhance the reliability, affordability, and sustainability of Ontario’s electricity grid.
