Hexagon Purus and Ballard Power Systems have announced a new partnership to build Class 6 and 7 Fuel Cell Electric Trucks using Hexagon Purus’ turnkey electric drivetrain and hydrogen storage system solutions, as well as Ballard’s fuel cell module.

This truck will have a range of more than 400 miles and refueling periods that are equivalent to those of regular trucks. It’s a zero-emission solution for fleet owners that need to move goods across the “middle miles” but don’t want to increase their fleet.

The FCmoveTM, Ballard’s eighth generation of fuel cell module, is a zero-emissions electric power source backed by over four decades of technical development and over 50 million miles of on-the-road experience.

Lightweight type 4 H2 storage systems, high energy density ProPack battery storage, and fully integrated electrified accessory systems from Hexagon Purus provide light, efficient, and long-range zero-emission power for electrified commercial vehicles.

In 2022, this truck is expected to be included to the Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Program (HVIP) qualifying vehicle list in California. The first fleet deployments will take place in and around the Los Angeles Basin, a market with some of the strictest air quality laws in the country. California is a national leader in promoting hydrogen fuel cell technology adoption, including the creation of a statewide hydrogen fuelling infrastructure to support fuel cell automobiles.

For decades, both Hexagon Purus and Ballard have offered hydrogen solutions and equipment to industry. This partnership between two industry veterans is intended to speed up the deployment of hydrogen and fuel cells in heavy-duty vehicles.

“Our goal is to drive energy transformation through zero emission mobility solutions. We look forward to leveraging our extensive experience in lightweight, reliable and safe hydrogen storage and battery electric drivetrain systems, and together with Ballard, pave the way to zero emission commercial transport,” says Todd Sloan, EVP, Hexagon Purus.

“Fuel cell and hydrogen technologies will enable the decarbonization of the heavy-duty transportation sector with long range and quick vehicle refueling, without compromising on payload. Our partnership with Hexagon Purus will deliver a high performance zero emission class 6-7 truck with the integration of state-of-the-art fuel cell engine, hydrogen storage and electric drivetrain” Nicolas Pocard, Vice-President Marketing & Strategic Partnership
