This week, a delegation from Belgium made headlines in Namibia with the unveiling of plans for Africa’s inaugural hydrogen-powered ship.

Cleanergy Solutions Namibia, a collaboration between CMB.TECH and the Ohlthaver & List Group, showcased the progress of the Cleanergy Green Hydrogen project at its site in Walvis Bay.

The Cleanergy Green Hydrogen project, slated for operational launch in the fourth quarter of 2024, marks a significant leap forward in sustainable energy solutions. Powered entirely by solar energy, the facility will produce green hydrogen on-site, catering to a diverse range of applications including hydrogen-powered trucks, port equipment, railway systems, and small ships.

A pivotal moment during the site visit was the ceremonial first filling of a dual-fuel truck at the hydrogen refueling station. Additionally, plans were announced for the development of Namibia’s maiden vessel powered by dual-fuel hydrogen engines. This venture, undertaken in collaboration with CMB.TECH, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, and Namport, aims to replicate the success of previous hydrogen initiatives, such as the Hydrotug and the multimodal hydrogen refueling station in the port of Antwerp.

The joint venture is now set to embark on the development of a multifunctional port utility vessel (MPHUV), equipped with dual-fuel hydrogen engines. This innovative design will facilitate various port operations while substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The involvement of the Port of Walvis Bay and Namport ensures valuable insights into vessel specifications and operational feedback, ensuring optimal performance upon commissioning.

Sven Thieme, executive chairman of Ohlthaver & List, expressed optimism about the project’s potential to pave the way for a greener future, harnessing the sun’s infinite energy. Alexander Saverys, CEO of CMB.TECH, highlighted the strategic significance of the initiative for the port of Walvis Bay, positioning it as a trailblazer in offering low-carbon logistics supply chains.

In addition to the infrastructure developments, the Cleanergy Green Hydrogen site will host an on-site Hydrogen Academy. This collaborative platform aims to upskill Namibians and stakeholders on hydrogen technology’s economic potential, fostering knowledge exchange among industry experts, suppliers, customers, and academic institutions.
