The construction of a renewable hydrogen plant in Queensland’s Western Downs is expected to begin within the next six months, according to a statement from the Queensland government.

To build the Kogan Renewable Hydrogen Demonstration Plant near Chinchilla, CS Energy has hired IHI Engineering Australia, with plans for a South West Queensland refueling network in the development phase.

The government of Palaszczuk will contribute $28.9 million to the cost. When fully operational in 2023, the project will produce 50,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen per year.

The demonstration project includes the co-location of a solar farm, battery, hydrogen electrolyser, hydrogen fuel cell, hydrogen storage, and out-loading facilities.

It will be built next to the Kogan Creek Power Station of CS Energy, but it will only be powered by the solar farm’s renewable energy. CS Energy’s energy hub at Kogan Creek will include the demonstration plant.
